The work that I’ve stepped into in my life has been built on a deeper connection with horse. A connection that has brought on growth that I’m not sure I would have received had I continued to resist the calling I had to work with horse (something I resisted for years before I surrendered to the calling).
In my new book, Life Lessons from the Heart of Horses, I explore the many lessons I’ve learned while on this journey. What I’m especially reminded of now after the many challenges the past year and half has presented is the ways in which horses are healers and what excellent teachers they have been to me throughout the years in healing and understanding energy fields.
My students often ask me…
What are the horses doing with the energy we are offering them?

Why are horses so willing to be the conduit of change for humans?
After studying horses for years, I’ve found four common ways that they work with our energy field and how we might better understand their nature and also the collective teachings they are bestowing upon us.
Horse as Mirror
The horse as mirror is a wide-spread concept in the equine facilitated learning field of work and takes place when the horse responds, typically through subtle yet powerful movement, to what the human offers energetically and at all levels of consciousness. By recognizing what horse is mirroring and awakening to the messages, better decisions can be made on an emotional, spiritual, and mental level.
Horse as Sponge
When a horse becomes an energetic sponge they are caretaking at a very high degree, absorbing the human’s uncomfortable energy patterns so that the human may feel better. The human may walk away with a sense of relief but this can be detrimental to the horse.
Horse as Diffuser
The horse that is the diffuser feels no need to rescue the human but instead is a master at holding space and witnessing the human’s process. The diffuser becomes a gentle conduit for release and change for those around them. This horse powerfully allows the energy that the human is offering to be present, and then gracefully enables the energy to flow once the human has reached a nonresistant state.
Horse as Spirit Alchemist
These horses are masterful energetic healers that can hold space for another’s process and actively help to release and transmute unproductive energy patterns or cycles. Horse as Spirit Alchemist can change the patterns of a human allowing them to experience a shift that lasts forever, removing all traces of what was, and a new, better present reality is created.
I have been able to witness horses working with energy fields with clients in my Coaching with Horses Programs. Each time I’m in awe by how horses work with their humans and the lasting impacts that bringing awareness to these connections has on not only their relationships with their horses but the lives overall of my clients.
