When I pull an Oracle card from my deck, Oracle of the Sacred Horse, I always center myself, connect to my divine guidance, and ask for the best card for my community to come forward. Then, with the images lying face down, I scan the fanned-out deck with my hand until heat and tingling ignite in the center of my palm.
When I drew this card, my initial reaction was one of surprise. “This card again? Didn’t we already explore this one last summer?” Indeed, you can even find a video of me discussing it on my blog. So, I returned it to the deck, got distracted with fetching a cold iced tea, and found myself muttering:
How much darker will it get?
Why are we in this darkness?
Will there REALLY be light after the darkness?
How much change is REALLY ahead of us?
All of these thoughts followed the events of last weekend. Some were inspiring, while others brought me deep sadness for those who have lost loved ones. This mix of emotions is a testament to our shared humanity.
So, what spirit wants me to do, I do.
I fished the card out of the deck and read it. It spoke to me on a global level, not just for me, but for the collective. And it may be the perfect card for many people for many months to come.
The Spirit of Light reminds me that significant change is happening in the world. It is the change that can feel like darkness (and for some, it is very dark). We cannot escape what is happening. Can we be fully present to it? Will we see the light when it shines to lead us forward?
Patience.

Spirit of Light – After the Darkness
Cycles, Hibernation, Dawn Breaking
A beautiful paint horse rears up in the night, its spirit carrying both the dark and the light. His eye is
bright with curiosity as his mane blows back in the wind. He looks to the distance, where there is light on a ridge. Having been in darkness for some time, he is drawn to the promise of new energy, which motivates his body and mind. The ground is hard, the branches bare, and the land is brown, but he knows the light that draws him forward will change everything.
The sun sets and rises. Summer turns to autumn, then winter, and finally becomes spring. You are born into the world to grow, explore, and eventually pass on. Times that feel flat, lifeless, or depressive will give way to lighter, more joyful experiences. The bounce will return to your step, and your view of the world will be more optimistic.
Within its mists, it is easy to feel that the darkness will never subside. Life may never be as it was, but the light will return. What was is now gone. In the stagnation of winter, your body, being, and brain can recalibrate. Hibernation allows you to rest and repair, realign your values and vision, and reset your system for when the dawn reemerges.
When you feel lost and surrounded by shadows, do not despair. Instead, go inward and review what you have done, who you have been, and what is most important to you. Like the ebbing of the tide, energetic lows are a natural part of your unfolding cycle. You may need more sleep or time alone to rest and prepare for the subsequent rise. This time is crucial to the unfolding of the next phase.
As you wake from the dark hibernation and slumber, you will see a light brighter than you have seen for a long time in the distance. The dawn breaking with new light calls your spirit forward — you must trust it. Your vision will be clearer, and you will feel a fresh pulse of energy course through your blood. You will feel yourself stretch, shake off the shadows, and tingle with anticipation. Just as the paint horse spirit catches the light of dawn in his eyes, your view will brighten with the emergence of your new life.
- How can you be more patient and understanding of your low periods?
- What challenge can you put down and let rest so a natural unfolding can emerge?
- Are you willing to welcome periods of darkness?
- Are there any areas where you are grasping and pushing for your next vision before it is ready to emerge?
- How can you step back and allow the light to open to you?
Change and transition cannot be escaped. Avoiding it merely keeps us in the status quo without growing or raising consciousness. What I know to be true is that when I choose change, even when there is unrest, good and light always come forth.

Spirit of Light – After the Darkness
Cycles, Hibernation, Dawn Breaking
Your words, your sensibility, your wisdom are glowing in the darkness.
For me, 78, my husband transitioned after 47 years as SoulMates in this realm. Our love and joy fills me now and into Eternity. And, with a major loss, there come periods of darkness. I have experienced many since Bill’s passing 11/11/24. I am heartened by your reading to be reminded of what I know to be true. For the first (?) time in this life I am experiencing patience. I am learning what a gift…a luxury I have to live secluded with desire for contemplation ever-present. In my grief I am being blessed with riches I didn’t know were possible. Thank you for your kindness, your compassion, your love, all which travel far into our needy world, with fresh breezes accompanying your light. Thank you.❤️🙏❤️
Sandra, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. It truly sounds like you are listening to your needs and creating the time for hibernation and contemplation. I am also glad you are finding the gifts. Many blessings to you and I hope you have a horse to be breathe with.
