This proud Appaloosa walks across the prairie as the wind blows the eagle feathers adorning his mane toward the sky. Centuries ago, the Nimiipuu People of North America were renowned for their horses. Flashy, bold, intelligent, and willing, their spotted bodies provided remarkable camouflage in the trees of the mountains and tall, dry grasses of the plains. They helped the Nimiipuu in many victories.
Many Indigenous Peoples of the Americas believe that everything— including plants, animals, and natural phenomena—possesses a spirit and soul. The universe speaks through all of life and offers virtue and wisdom to those who listen intently. Eagles, the strongest and bravest of all birds, soar to the highest parts of the sky and connect to the heavens. When a bald eagle feather comes to earth, it is considered a gift from the gods. Those who find or are gifted a bald eagle feather receive a great honor. As symbols of courage, strength, and hope, eagle feathers were gifted to those who were victorious in combat. Horses might be adorned with eagle feathers, so they brought this medicine into battle.
