Last month I was in the deep Southwest enjoying the early budding of spring on the desert floor and low brush of Arizona. One morning, I went out to say hello to the herd. Five glorious athletic equines came cantering down the gentle sloping hill as soon as they saw me near the gate at the bottom. Once started on this journey together, they flowed like a river with momentum and power toward me.
My presence filled with grounding energy as I invited them into my space to say hello. Surrounded by a very masculine and stocky paint, a stoic and kind roan gelding, a gregarious black half Arab and half quarter horse, along with a lovely Arab bay and sweet grey mare, my heart skipped a beat as joy filled my whole being.
The week before, this herd had offered several profound individual sessions to my clients during the Horse as Shaman program. I thought I had seen pretty much everything but they stepped right up into their position of service in expanding human consciousness and presented ways of communicating and mirroring that I had not seen before. Each client experienced a key piece of “self” that needed to be returned and restored into their being.
Year after year, my work continues to deepen in supporting individuals embracing their spirituality, learning about their true essence, and discovering how they are here to serve in this world. The horses here have willingly stepped in to assist each person. They carry us to our own light, or that which makes meaning through a deep integration of body and heart, bringing a palpable fullness that may not have been there previously. From this place of emotional and energetic wholeness, a giant step forward in life unfolds. Yet, often we have no real idea where we are going; we can only grasp the essence of it.
Many years ago I remember doing a “future visualization” with my coach. I remember the sensory details that came through, how I would be in nature and teaching others. I really had no idea how it was all going to transpire as it felt like it was miles away from where I sat, in my condo, experiencing the visualization. I remember that I saw myself as a writer and coach for people, that my drive way was dirt and the pebbles would crunch when people arrived, that there were pine trees and a sense of being on a retreat.
Through the 14 years of returning to Horse and 20 years after that visualization, I find myself on the land with that dirt drive and those pine trees. The essence of my visualization came true. I am also, now, surrounded by my own herd of healing horses that have helped me find my way with each new level of growth and expansion along the way.
What I know to be true is that I don’t believe I would have reached this place without the horses. I tried for two years to ignore the calling of horse. A calling that felt overwhelming and undoable. I claimed I did not have the time or the resources. I did not even have a horse when I first was deeply drawn to the work. In fact, I had no income and was a bit depressed.
But the horses did not stop calling. The information and reminders kept coming to me through the mail or email. Everywhere I turned people where giving me more things related to horses.
Some times we just have to engage trust and have courage and strength. Like the herd of horses cantering down the slope, we as humans must allow the energy of life to carry us, to stop resisting the invitation to “come home” to the place we instinctively know we belong. The only thing that is stopping us is the controlling ego, the part of us that would rather maintain a dull dearly life than have the exuberance of a passionate well-lived life.
I leave you today with a few questions:
- What would be possible for you if you listened to your inner calling and took a leap forward?
- Would you rather be the exuberant alive, internally free, and expressive creature in this world or the bystander with all of the “yah-butts”?
- What will you miss out on by not running down the slope and following the flow of energy?
My wish for you is that you take a step toward your next level of divine alignment, authenticity, greatness and contribution. As you heal and expand you help all of those around you do the same. Your courage to collaboration with horse in this manner contributes to the increased awareness and the rising of human consciousness to love, honor and respect Horse, each other and the earth.
All you really have to do it show up, then allow yourself to canter down the gentle slope with the herd.
If you are ready, willing and able . . . my herd and I are ready for you!
