The Academy for Coaching with Horses

Join international author, teacher, and founder of The Academy for Coaching with Horses, Kathy Pike, along with several other professional Equine Facilitated Learning and Coaching certified practitioners as they share their love of Horse and expertise in a variety of fields related to the emerging practice of Equine Facilitated Learning.
The Coaching with Horses Retreat and Conference resulted in such an expansive and rewarding time with each other and the horses that Kathy pike is hosting the second annual event. This incredible experience takes place over a three day period at the White Stallion Ranch in Tucson, Arizona. White Stallion Ranch provides a retreat-like setting complete with an insightful herd of wonderful horses. The ranch offers the perfect environment to…

What might you gain while you are at this program?
This program offers a rare blend of taking time to simply “be” and to grow personally and professionally. You will enjoy a diverse herd of kind horses, the natural desert setting, warm days and cool nights, yoga, and time to reflect and enjoy the ranch. If you are new to this type of work you will have the opportunity to experience Horse in a way that you may not have previously.
Many individuals who are already certified, or have taken training courses with other teachers in the equine based learning field, attend Kathy’s programs. The deep, body-centered, heart-based approach often facilitated through the use of the Mind Body Method will be reflected in the sessions offered. As a professional in the field, you will have the opportunity to advance your skill set, gather new concepts and ideas to support your work, and meet other professionals in related areas of work.
What makes The Coaching with Horses Retreat and Conference different?
Kathy wanted to ensure that The Coaching with Horses Retreat and Conference stood out from the rest. We have accomplished this by building this Retreat and Conference around several unique considerations:
Attendance is very limited
While many conference events host up to hundreds of people, we have limited attendance to our retreat-styled event to create a very intimate setting of sharing and bonding with others. With only up to 35 participants in attendance, you will have an exclusive opportunity to interact with, ask questions and get to know the horses and the real details behind this work.
True Experiential Presentations
Several of our presenters will not only be offering you the insight and knowledge of their specialty within the EFLC world, but will also be sharing an actual experience with you. Due to the limited attendance, several equine-based learning sessions will have only 6 to 8 people and you will personally get to participate in these experiences and have a very hands-on and intimate learning session. Each morning and afternoon there will be three different breakout sessions offered. Some sessions will be offered twice to ensure you can attend those you are attracted to.
Qualified and Experienced Presenters
As a leader in the EFLC community, Kathy had many, many specialists submit applications to present sessions at this Retreat and Conference and the result enabled her to select a distinct variety of presenters each with a very specific specialty within the field. Most of the presenters are previous graduates of The Academy for Coaching with Horses. Each and every one will provide a high quality and insightful experience for you. A perfect way for individuals already offering their own programs to expand their skill set and gather new ideas on facilitating.
Exceptional Spiritual Retreat-Like Setting
The Coaching with Horses Conference structure provides you an all-inclusive spiritual retreat setting surrounded by a herd of over 100 horses. A very casual and personal atmosphere allows for continual interaction and facilitates authentic connections between both participants and presenters. Gatherings and activities function as ideal catalysts to encourage friendships and support the spiritual motivation behind the entire event.
Special Morning Ride – Ritual Ride in the Desert
The conference will be concluding with a very special “Ritual Ride”. During this ride the group moves through the fragrant and expansive desert in silence and communion with their horse just below the spectacular Rincon Mountains located in the Saguaro National Park. It includes a spiritual ritual below the mountain peaks. A lovely way to end a very special time and set intentions for the future! A matchless experience.
Additional Retreat Days Available
If you might like to stay at the White Stallion Ranch a few extra days before or after the event, you may do so. The White Stallion Ranch has generously offered to extend the special lodging prices offered to our community of presenters and participants for additional nights. How much better can it get? Enjoy time by the pool, a massage, an invigorating hike or one of their other equine activities. Book early to reserve your nights as the ranch fills quickly.

Monday and Tuesday Sessions
Horses Help You to Remember: Reconnect with Your Inner Wisdom
Presented by: Crystal Zinn
Within all of us is the capacity to be fully present, in safety and calm, to access multiple levels of inner wisdom and intelligence. The Reflective Round Pen session invites a horse at liberty to bring us into compassionate connection with our deepest held beliefs about ourselves. These beliefs offer us valuable information about how we participate in life and with others. And these beliefs, often called our inner voice, have roots back to our earliest attachments with primary caregivers in life.
The wisdom of the horse will help us tune in to these messages, and to be curious and compassionate, about these long held beliefs. Whatever messages surface during an interaction with a horse they guide us to transform in a way that serves our greater good. Horses, like humans, are social creatures and instinctively desire to connect with a secure and loving attachment figure. That desire also lives within us, from birth onward, as we learn to love and bond with people that continue to enhance our secure sense of attachment. And yet sometimes, the inner voice from our early years can get in our way to create healthy relationships. This sessions offers an opportunity along with new tools to re-connect with our authentic natural self; the part of us that knows we are worthy of love, are secure, and are valuable. We will practice tools to become more present and grounded our body, and acknowledge the flow of feelings. We will also explore the concept of holding sacred and safe space for others. Experiencing the Reflective Round Pen can forever change your relationship to Horse as well as all of your human relationships, creating more authentic connections with self and others.
When GPS Fails: Navigating Your Journey with Confidence
Presented by: Kay Anderson
If you rely on GPS to get you from Point A to Point B, you’re not alone. This high-tech communication tool pings specific location information to us during every step of our journey. It’s nearly impossible to get lost using this system.
What navigational system do you have for your life journey?
With no external GPS, birds fly south for the winter, salmon swim upstream to spawn, turtles hatch and immediately make their way to the water and horses find their way home (or intuitively move away from danger). What if you could harness the inner wisdom that birds, salmon, turtles and horses use? You can easily do this and lead a life of thriving instead of merely surviving.
This hands-on session with Horse is for those individuals who are seeking greater clarity about the blocks on their life journey. While guiding a horse through various obstacles you will be presented with opportunities for new ways to see, think and feel about your path. While partnering with Horse you gain clearer understanding of non-verbal communication, align intention for forward movement, move through life’s obstacles, claim an authentic voice to successfully navigate transitions, and obtain greater clarity and confidence around “who am I on this path” and how do I represent the “real me.” You become more authentic through the guidance of Horse.
Horse-Powering Success: Horsing Around with Emotional and Social Intelligence
Presented by: Janis Cooper
“Emotional intelligence (EI) or emotional quotient (EQ) is the capacity of individuals to recognize their own, and other people’s emotions, to discriminate between different feelings and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior.” (Wikipedia)
Research reveals that a high correlation exists between emotional intelligence and individual or group performance, ranking it higher in success than factors such as IQ. And yet, as a result of the level of stress people are under today, studies show a declining trend of EQ in the workplace which puts at risk the ability of people to collaborate, build relationships based on trust, to innovate, and take risks; factors that impede both individual and business success.
Horse guides us through several group activities working from the ground to help you develop EQ. Learning promises to be rich in depth as you experience how partnering with horses can support the development of emotional and social intelligence for you and others. Activities with horses will be supported by reflective group facilitation.
If you would like to have greater self-awareness to improve communication and collaboration with others, the horse will show you the way. As you create a human herd you also will develop new ways to respect and honor diversity within a group. As a member of the herd you gain tools and practices on how to deal with rising emotions of others, manage your own energy within group settings, practice empathy, and ultimately move forward with success during challenging times.
If you have a strong interest in exploring relationship dynamics, working with teams and developing your leadership skills, Horse will give you the insights you are ready to receive to become more conscious in all of your relations.
Heart IQ: Becoming More Horse-like through Exploring the Heart’s Energy Field
Presented by: Marry Livingston
Imagine for a moment that you can see the energy field around a horse. You might imagine translucent rings extending out creating layers and bubbles in the field. You may not be able to see it when you open your eyes, but you can, and do, feel it with your body, your intuitive senses and your heart intelligence.
Horses have these astute sensing capacities and can feel when you enter their energy field or personal space. Horses living in wild herds have a heightened level of sensing and can pick up on the presence of all living beings from a great distance. They routinely use this intelligence as a means to survive and thrive in their herds.
Humans have the innate ability to sense this energy field also, but often, through one’s life process, we lose sensitivity to these messages, or we become conditioned to ignore and/or shut out those internal signals. This session offers you the chance to re-awaken this innate ability and access a powerful and impactful communication link. Unconscious information is always being exchanged back and forth between you and Horse, as well as other human relations. What might be possible when you are listening and sensing this information?
Igniting Your Felt Sense and Body Intuition in the Presence of Horse
Presented by: Alejandra Lara
Nature, as well as horses, provide us with the opportunity to become fully embodied and in the present moment. During this introspective and profound exploration, you will practice the art of sensory awareness in the presence of Horse. Horse will guide you into a deep discovery of your felt sense and inner body intuition, reminding you of what you truly already know.
During this experience, you will discover the power of removing external senses to descend into the Self. Practicing a connection with Self and Horse with blindfolded eyes ignites the intelligence within the rest of the senses. By removing visual references, you deepen and refine your connection to your senses and key information that is offered. The present moment becomes magnified and your body intuition flows with grace. With gentle guidance and support and while using breathing practices to ground and connect the rest of your senses; hearing, taste, touch, and smell, you experience the innate intuition of the body as you go deeper into a Horse-Like state of being.
Through this process you will learn to trust your already existing intuition, gut feelings and ability to perceive beyond vision and how it impacts your ability to make pure aligned life decisions.
Conscious Cowgirl: Every Moment Counts in Your Relationship with Horse
Presented by: Mari Rubens
A Conscious Cowgirl is always seeking to create the optimal interactions in partnership with Horse. There are truly no exchanges with our horses that “don’t matter” as the nature of Horse is to continuously evaluate the ongoing quality and authenticity within their relationships. In the ideal world of partnership with our horses, we are always building and strengthening our bond and connection with them. While some horses are more forgiving when we forget our manners in the equine partnership…even the most forgiving horse appreciates our efforts to offer trust, respect, presence and connection.
One simple, yet profound way to gift your horse with these offerings is through conscious touch. The horse’s skin, which exhibits such a tough exterior and can tolerate kicks and bites from pasture mates, is full of sensitive nerve endings, each exquisitely tuned to the slightest and lightest of touches. Watch a horse quiver when a fly lands on their ever so sensitive smooth coat!
When we take time to watch horses interacting in a pasture, we see that touch is integral to their connection and communication. Horses are able to tell us immediately if the touch we are offering is a comfortable pressure or rhythm for them and if the brushes we are using are what they find enjoyable.
The Reflective Grooming session will offer you a very special “hands on” time with horse. This is a gentle, reflective experience where you will be guided in creating a quiet, heart centered connection with Horse as you step into Horse Consciousness through your awareness of touch, being in the present moment and coming into the rhythm of the heart space.
During this session, you will learn qualities of Horse that can bring you greater states of awareness about how every aspect of your being creates relationships in daily life with family, friends and work co-horts. You will be guided using processes that you will be able to take home and use as a simple “keep it conscious” relationship booster with your horses and all of your human relations.
Healthy Happy Horse: Using the Chakra System and Reiki to Keep You and Your Horse Balanced and Vibrant
Presented by: Anouk Lorie
Every living being has energy centers (or Chakras) that can be balanced and rejuvenated for higher levels of health. During this presentation you will learn about the origin, purpose, physical location, theme, key beliefs to shift and bioenergetic activity of each of the seven energy centers. Through hands on application (with horses) you learn how to utilize these centers to create wellness for yourself and your horse.
We will start with a brief over view of the chakra system and the meaning found in each center, for both human and horse. Then we will move directing into working hands on with the horses. You gain confidence in sensing and working with the seven energy fields of the horse while using basic reiki principles and techniques. Increasing your sensitivities to the seven different areas will help you to better understand how to keep yourself and your horse centered and grounded during a variety of situations. The tools taught can be used in your personal life or even blended into your EFLC practice.
With the help of the incredible herd of White Stallion Ranch, discover how the Chakra system and Reiki can help you and your horse to achieve the vital energy both of you need to flourish, remain balanced and vibrant.
Dancing with Horse: Co-creating Flow and Igniting Reverence and Appreciation
Presented by: Kathy Pike
Have you ever watched a person move with grace and ease accompanied by a beautiful and willing equine partner? Have you longed to have that same experience with your own horse?
There is a place we can go with Horse, where such ease, connection and grace can move us deeply. When we find this special place in space all time stands still and something beyond us moves through us. It is a sacred connection between two being of different worlds, meeting in a space of oneness. Our body begins to move and horse follows along, we separate and come back to connect, eyes become bright and curious and hearts open with possibility. This is the dance of Horse. Open your eyes and your heart and know that you can find this place not only with your herd, but also in all of your life.
Dancing with Horse is a journey beyond horse training or technique where we meet Horse in his or her world, in the greater Horse Consciousness. During this two part learning session Kathy will demonstrate some of the key ways to prepare and communicate with your horse for dancing. She will give you tips on how to also prepare yourself and begin this highly experiential and creative process with Horse.
Kathy Pike is the founder of The Academy for Coaching with Horses. She is a speaker, coach, facilitator and the internationally published author of Hope from the Heart of Horses: How Horses Teach Us about Presence, Strength and Awareness, available in both English and Dutch. As a pioneer in the field of Equine Facilitated Learning and Coaching, Kathy has taught EFLC Certification Programs worldwide. Her work has reached over 18 countries as she has trained others to employ Horse as guide and mentor for the human heart and spirit. Human and Horse . . .Belonging: The Importance of Attachment Styles in Equine Facilitated Work
with Crystal Zinn
Both Humans and Horses have a deep need to be connected and feel like they belong. It is one of our strongest desires and unconscious motivations. Our earliest relationships with our primary attachment figures affect us throughout our lives. The brain, as a social organ, relies on feedback from parental figures to develop neural pathways. The result of all this feedback creates our attachment style – our working model for relationships in adulthood, influencing how we define our needs, and how we go about getting them met.
As an Equine Learning Facilitator, awareness of attachment styles will help you attune to your clients’ deepest held beliefs about themselves. You will be better able to tune into clients’ ways of sensing, regulating, and expressing attachment fears and longings that guide each client’s moves.
Horses may mirror attachment styles to your clients. Understanding and knowing your own attachment style allows conversation that helps a client explore their world with someone who is emotionally present, accessible, and responsive, much like a good attachment figure.
Additional Morning Session
One of the best things we can do for our relationship with self, others and with horses is to have aliveness and vitality in our body. You are invited to stretch your body, open your senses, and find your center each morning with movement and breath work.
