"I will always be deeply affected by the Round Pen Sessions. When I went home, I went up to the stalls where we are keeping four mares, one is, "Chilly." She is three years old and has spent all of her life (up until last fall) out on the range with a herd of broodmares who were never handled either. She is so 'untamed' that if you try and touch her, the skin over her whole body ripples, trying to get away from your touch! I went up to the mare's stalls to do chores and feed, but I was still feeling some emotions moving through me from the program, all I could do was stand in the stall and hug and lean against the first horse I touched. As I stood next to a horse names Alli, petting her and letting tears run down my face, I noticed Chilly was right up against the fence withher head as far over into Alli's stall as she could get it, with this intense, longing expression on her face. She was practically begging me to reach out and touch her. Chilly was so uncharacteristically connected with what I was doing and I felt this strong 'pull' coming from her, so I took a couple of steps toward her and slowly reached out my hand towards her pretty head. I felt like she was a magnet drawing me in. When my fingers touched her forehead, not only did she not flinch or pull back, but she actually pushed her head further into my hand as if she was saying, "Yes, this is what I want. Now I am ready." I stood there and softly stroked her face and ears and neck, and could feel her opening up to my presence and connecting with me. It was an amazing moment and a huge break-through in our relationship. Ever since that afternoon, she accepts my touch and looks forward to the little handfuls of fresh grass I pick for her before I enter her stall (she would never before take food or treats from my hand either!). I look forward to the days when she and I can ride in the meadows and breathe the fresh mountain air together! So thank you, and thank you to your wonderful apprentices who facilitated such a wonderful program."
